What is the correlation between the mass of the reactants and the mass of the products when a gas is formed?

Independent Variable:Mass of the reatants
Dependent Variable:Mass of the products
Constants:same equiptment, same chemicals

  • The balance was zeroed.
  • Mass of the glassware was measured (24.2g)
  • Ten mililiters of water added to the vial
  • Alka-Seltzer was placed on the balance
  • The new mass(reactants+glassware) was 34.0g
  • Mass of the reactants is 9.8
  • The Alka-Seltzer was placed in the vial with the water and the lid was put on
  • The Alka-Selzer began to dislove and the product of carbon dioxide was formed
  • Mass remained 34.0g
  • The mass of the products was the same as the reactants(9.8)
  • The lid was removed and very little gas was produced
When a gas is formed, the mass of the reactants and the mass of the products stay the same thanks the the Law of Conservation of Mass. This supports our hypothesis.
